Hi all,
at UKIRT we had a long standing problem with devices
on our Allen Bradley not working in cold temperatures.
At the Brookhaven EPICS meeting Karen White mentioned
something about the operating specs of the Panelview
(like we have one in the UKIRT dome - i.e. more or less
outside). I asked her after her talk and she said that
we're most likely operating the Panelview out of spec.
It has since been tested that even when the Panelview
is unresponsive the EPICS control still works, so the
old problem wasn't a problem of the Allen Bradley as a
whole but only with the Panelview.
We have started remote operation since then and were
glad to have a few cold nights before doing so, so that
the operating personnel were able to verify that they
could (e.g.) close the dome remotely (from an EPICS
screen) even when they couldn't close it 'locally'
(from the Panelview). Knowing this made it much easier
for us to start remote operation (from Hilo, without
anybody in the UKIRT dome) without being worried about
equipment damage by weather.
I wanted to finally broadcast a "Thank you" to Karen.
Aloha,
Maren Purves
