Just to follow up, I got a couple private replies (thanks!). One
company is moving (slowly?) to python though they didn't mention use
of the i2py converter, researcher's resistance to change was noted.

Have you tried GDL? http://gnudatalanguage.sourceforge.net/
It is available in the software repositories of Fedora,Redhad and
Centos. Also works on Ubuntu. I've tried using it couple of years ago
with Mati Meron's IDL routines but there was some IDL function not
implemented in GDL yet. ... It was USERSYMS procedure that is still
not available in IDL but it seem that it will be implemented in the
next GDL version
