Experimental Physics and Industrial Control System

Hi Rolf,
There are several different implementations of CA plug-ins for
Nagios/Icinga, a common open source tool for monitoring IT infrastructure.
Some are so-called "active checks" (run by the Icinga server) doing CA
get operations, others are stand-alone servers monitoring CA PVs and
feeding the updates into the Icinga server ("passive checks"). The EPICS
alarm levels map nicely onto the Nagios/Icinga severities.
The Nagios/Icinga ecosystem has a large number of plugins and interfaces
offering a wide range of functionality.
For data mining, you can feed the Nagios/Icinga logs into a big data log
database, e.g. Splunk, which offers very powerful offline analysis.
(Especially if it also gets the logs from IOC consoles, servers and
network devices.)
Pointers:
For Nagios/Icinga, Legnaro Labs and BESSY II use the active checks, APS
uses a monitoring daemon (passive checks).
Splunk is used at a couple of facilities, including NSLS-II and BESSY II.
I also remember ICALEPCS and EPICS Meeting posters/talks about these things.
Cheers,
~Ralph

I would be interested to know if anyone in the
non-Control-System-Studio world uses/has an alarm handler other than
the motif-based alh.
