Hi Whitney,
  I'm curious what features you are looking for in a new display manager (besides not being a nightmare to compile and setup)?  There are pros and cons to retained mode vs immediate mode, and these implementation strategies are not tied to a particular language, or library for that matter.  Maybe a better way to rephrase is, "what is it that MEDM does NOT do that you need?"
