Nilson:

The power supply manufacturers Sorenson, TT, Lambda and other popular
manufacturers have a wide range of power supplies with LAN connections
suitable for control via the EPICS streamDevice support, using a SCPI or
SCPI-like API. These are in wide use at TRIUMF and have been very
successful. If your EPICS support includes some way to drive a DAC via
an analog output record, there are many other supplies that allow
programmable control through an analog input, and supply current and
voltage readback through analog outputs that you can read with ADC
support via analog input records. This mode is also in wide use here.

Here is a photo of a a system consisting of black box with a Measurement Computing device packaged inside that does both thermocouple input and analog output. The analog output is connected to the Sorensen power supply shown below it. We are using a model with up to 33 V and 33 A (1000 W) which is well matched to heaters with 1 ohm resistance. There is a model with maximum 7.5 V output and maximum 130 A, which would be a better match for lower resistance heaters.
