We've ended up doing something similar here, our 20s are on private networks, our 40s have usually ended up on serial (via a Moxa) as even on private networks we weren't getting suitable behaviour. The downside to that is the way we use them we end up with a high memory usage on the serial ones.

On the network the Galil would get into an error state that could only be resolved by restarting it which isn't always easy given their physical locations.

I don't think we've tried a firewall yet, so can't comment on whether or not that helps, although I'm not sure what would have been broadcasting on the private VLAN consisting of a computer and Galils. But a serial connection via a Moxa seems to do enough that the systems are usable.

Regards,
Kathryn

Hi,

I’ve been seeing the same problem for years with the Galil DMC40x0 controllers. I have tried some of the ethernet tricks that the firmware supports (like the IK and IB commands), but nothing really worked. I did find that updating the firmware to a recent version (>1.2h) did help a lot on some systems, but didn’t solve it entirely. I was able to lock up a controller on one beamline just by starting an IOC. The only solution we have found that works long term is to put the controllers behind a firewall that blocks broadcast traffic, or isolating the controllers on a dedicated network port. If that’s not possible then I would recommend using a serial port via a Moxa.

Cheers,
Matt
