Hi Bob,
We are using cloud protocols (S3) on our own storage systems. We use minio (https://min.io/) for this.
This also gives us the possibility to mirror our data with another MPI institute ( In Göttingen). In Göttingen they use the
ceph filesystem (https://docs.ceph.com/en/quincy/cephfs/) with S3 (https://access.redhat.com/documentation/en-us/red_hat_ceph_storage/4/html/developer_guide/ceph-object-gateway-and-the-s3-api).

We are also playing/working on an implementation of a Java NIO2 interface for minio to connect the S3 storage
system to the archiver appliance.
