Folks,

I was able to get Phoebus 6.0.0 running on Windows.  I just installed the Microsoft build of OpenJDK 25, and then the phoebus.bat file just worked.

I also got Phoebus 6.0.0 running on Linux with OpenJDK 21 using these commands:

sudo dnf install java-21-openjdk-devel
sudo update-alternatives --config java
sudo update-alternatives --config javac

The latter 2 commands select which version of the JDK is selected.

Mark

Hi Mark

You can certainly use your own JDK, version 22 or for the next release, 25. Kay had been including the JDK in the SNS specific packaged versions for convenience. I don’t know offhand what his generic build includes and I am away from the office for a bit so it is not easy for me to check. I do know that the “nightly” build  is not currently nightly, though.

Folks,

I am trying to install Phoebus on Windows.  When I go to ORNL site (https://controlssoftware.sns.ornl.gov/css_phoebus/) it says this:

  1. For Linux, install Java. Suggested is the current one from Open JDK. For Windows or Mac OS X, Java is included in the `phoebus...zip`.
  2. Download the `phoebus-*.zip` for your architecture
I downloaded the nightly build from August 11, 2026 and extracted it.  It contains this directory:

phoebus-4.7.4-SNAPSHOT

That surprises me, I would have thought it should be a 5.x or 6.x release?

This is the contents of that directory:

 Directory of C:\Users\rivers\Downloads\phoebus-win\phoebus-4.7.4-SNAPSHOT

10/13/2026  11:49 AM    <DIR>          .
10/13/2026  11:48 AM    <DIR>          ..
10/13/2026  11:49 AM    <DIR>          doc
10/13/2026  11:49 AM    <DIR>          lib
10/13/2026  11:48 AM               951 phoebus.bat
10/13/2026  11:48 AM                93 phoebus.desktop
10/13/2026  11:48 AM               978 phoebus.sh
10/13/2026  11:48 AM               499 phoebus.xml
10/13/2026  11:48 AM             3,302 product-4.7.4-SNAPSHOT.jar

               7 File(s)         79,030 bytes
               4 Dir(s)  195,588,313,088 bytes free

I don't see a JDK there, but the instructions say that Java is included in the phoebus...zip file.

Am I missing something?

I also tried downloading the latest 6.0.0 .zip file form Github.  That contains the directory

product-6.0.0

That directory contains:

Directory of C:\Users\rivers\Downloads\phoebus-win-6.0.0\product-6.0.0

10/13/2026  11:55 AM    <DIR>          .
10/13/2026  11:54 AM    <DIR>          ..
10/13/2026  11:55 AM    <DIR>          doc

10/13/2026  11:54 AM                93 phoebus.desktop
10/13/2026  11:54 AM               978 phoebus.sh
10/13/2026  11:54 AM             6,060 product-6.0.0.jar
10/13/2026  11:54 AM             5,828 README.md
               5 File(s)         13,910 bytes
               4 Dir(s)  194,714,386,432 bytes free

That also does not contain a JDK.

Is the recommendation to install from Github and then install the JDK separately?

Thanks,
Mark
