Subject: Re: DEC AXP VME boards

I have already contacted DEC on this. They sent me a bunch of
propaganda on it. It supposedly costs in the same ballpark as the 167,
but I am sure that the configuration quoted is RAM-less and therefore
unusable... I suspect that a decent AXP-based VME card would come in
over $6k. But have not requested any quotes on them yet.

Noone at APS has asked for anything like this yet, so I have not done
anything beyond getting on the DEC junk-mail lists.

My opinion is that an EPICS port to the alpha board would be possible.
But the majority of the time spent doing it would be dealing with the
cross-compiling environment... even if we used an AXP for development,
we may run into an assortment of object file format problems. Before
any work is done in this area, I recommend a good talk with WRS about
the load module formats that the AXP version of vxWorks expects. I fear
an unpleasent suprise awaits us.
