LBL (LBNL) will upgrade to Tornado. We need future BSP's, C++
support (which includes global constructor/destructor and shell name
re-mangling but not iostream), and kernel upgrades. Since EPICS needs
global symbol table resident, the RAM-saving features of host-resident
symbols+shell+loader aren't as valuable, I think.
I agree with Chip that the two low-level protocols represent potentially new
security leaks. However, many EPICS sites have never even invoked the
existing security features and are wide open. Strict control over
IP routing and other measures can reduce the likelihood of both inside
goofs and outside attacks. If you continue to use the online shell/symbol/
linker, I think you can disable the remote low-level feature. John
Winans says he defaults the debugger task, for example, to be suspended.
If you need it, you know enough to do a "tr".
