Jefferson Lab (CEBAF) took Eric's code from LANL and added back in
the multi-processor support he dropped, and tweaked the initialization
and error handling, mostly for fast highways.  Eric may have made additional
mods in the meantime, but we are not very far out from each other now, and
I hope we'll merge again when the current round of changes stabilizes.
