Thanks to all of you who congratulated me for receiving the University
of Chicago Distinguished Service award.

Although It would be nice to think that I am receiving the award because
of my technical accomplishments, I know this is not true. The reason I
am receiving the award is because EPICS is being used successfully at
many sites around the world.

EPICS is successfully being used because of all the people who have
contributed to it's development. I am only one of many.

Without the collaboration, EPICS would not be so widely used and I would
not be receiving the award. The initial collaboration was between
ANL/APS and LANL/GTA. During the early years it was not always easy to
continue collaborating. The attitude "Why do we need them. We are doing
most of the work" existed both at APS and at LANL. Because they made it
possible for me to collaborate, I want to mention three people by name:
Marty Knott, Bill McDowell, and Bob Dalesio

Marty Knott was the APS controls group leader when APS started. Before I
was part of APS,
he established communication with the LANL/GTA group about
collaborating. Whenever I felt too much pressure about continuing to
work closely with LANL, I would get Marty involved and he always
supported collaborating.

When Marty was promoted, Bill McDowell became the controls group leader.
He, just like Marty, supported collaborating. Without Bill's support
collaborating would not have been possible.

Many of the basic ideas in EPICS came from Bob Dalesio. In fact most of
my work has been refining these ideas. The fact that EPICS is in use at
so many sites is due to the efforts by LANL, with major contributions by
Bob, to make other sites aware of what EPICS could do.
Very early Bob and I agreed that we would try as hard as we could to
keep working together. It is a joy to see the good results that have
come from this agreement.

Again thanks to everyone who has contributed to the development of EPICS
and to everyone who willingly uses EPICS. In a very real sense I share
this award with all of you.
