I don't know if MEDM 2.3.5 is able to do what you want, but I'd like to
mention, that dm2k (the "european" version of MEDM, formerly named MEDM 2.4,
MEDM/DESY...) provides such a feature.

In dm2k, there is sth. called "Dynamic Symbol" which enables you to have a
library (i.e. another adl-file) of more or less complex groups of objects.

At runtime dm2k picks the object to display depending on the value of a PV,
so it may even change the displayed object at runtime.

Using this, you can easily compose a set of objects representing open or
closed valves, pumps... in a single adl-file and reuse these objects in any
adl-file you create.

To make sharing of these libraries easier, I'd volunteer to add an area to
the dm2k homepage to make those symbol-libraries available to others. Just
send me your adl-files and the corresponding part of the graphic rules.

The current version of dm2k is 2.5.1 and is available at

          http://www-csr.bessy.de/control/SoftDist/dm2k/

2.5.2 is currently undergoing some final tests and will be released soon.
This version will then also support cdev instead of channel access (thanks
to J.Chen @ JLab)!

Regards,
Thomas Birke
