Ian,
Your file doesn't seem to use any GIF89a features. You can probably
fix it simply by changing the GIF ID text, GIF89a, to GIF87a in the first 6
bytes of the file. DM is only checking that ID when it prints the message
you mentioned. It shouldn't hurt anything, even if it doesn't work. (I did
that and will forward it you to separately.)
If you need to do this again, and the above doesn't work, there is an
EPICS extension, SGA, that manipulates GIF files. It doesn't save as
GIF87a, but if you eliminate all the non-image blocks, save it, and then
change the first 6 bytes as above, it may work.

I can't get dm to load a gif image. I get the error message: loadGIF: not
a GIF file. I've tried it with monochrome and 256 colour versions and
passed it through xv to no avail. The image is attached.
