Marty,

I prefer your solution; it is so simple, I ask myself why this wasn't
done when the link definition was changed so that "" != "0" (was that
3.13.1?).

Definitely not. Anyway you'll have to have two ways if you want to be
backward compatible. Remember the solution for the linear conversion?

Something else: Some people might get different behavior with existing
databases because of VAL assignments which are now ignored. It should be
fairly easy, though, to run a simple (perl) script to detect such
assignments and throw them out if the default should be undefined value.

Anyway, each site can make this change by themselves.
