Problems building 3.14.0beta1

I am having difficulty building EPICS base 3.14.0beta1 on what I believe is a vanilla configuration:

SunOS flora01 5.8 Generic_108528-10 sun4u sparc SUNW,Ultra-2
cc: Sun WorkShop 6 update 1 C 5.2 2000/09/11
gcc version egcs-2.91.66 19990314 (egcs-1.1.2 release)
This is perl, version 5.005_03 built for sun4-solaris
VxWorks-68040 and Tornado 2.0.2

If EPICS_HOST_ARCH is solaris-sparc, the build produces many warnings and then fatal errors like
ld: fatal: symbol `baseNMIU::__vtbl' is multiply-defined:
        (file ../../../lib/solaris-sparc//libca.a(wf7lJb0V17k-ahW5szGy.o) and file ../../../lib/solaris-sparc//libca.a(baseNMIU.o));

If EPICS_HOST_ARCH is solaris-sparc-gnu, the build gets further but still produces many warnings and then fatal errors like

ld: fatal: symbol `resTable<casEventMaskEntry, stringId>::tableSize(void) const' is multiply-defined:
        (file ../../../../../lib/solaris-sparc-gnu//libcas.a(caServerI.o) and file ../../../../../lib/solaris-sparc-gnu//libcas.a(casEventMask.o));

What am I doing wrong?
