LANSCE has an EPICS knob record which, with various device support modules, supports everything from our home-built VME knob chassis to two shaft encoders under a dm screen, to completely hardware free "soft knob" screens. As this might imply, our knobs run on the IOCs instead of the OPI's (like sundials -- although with a serial device support module, we could run sundials on an IOC too). In general, our experience has been that knobs with local displays are preferable to knobs with remote displays (sundials/km). Also, it is important to pay attention to how the panels are mounted. Knobbing has been associated with some repetitive stress injuries in some of our operators. We did an ICALEPCS paper on knob interface design last year, which I'll send you under separate cover. -Eric Bjorklund (currently with SNS global controls)
