I don't think that anyone should start with the oldest instrumenation bus that they can find. With regard to putting real-time into home-grown hardware, please see all of the devices around the globe that are not supported as they were home-grown and the designer is no longer around. I really see this as a last resort. A number of spares for bit-bus would have been helpful. Today, it seems a good bet to put anything you can on the ethernet. The protocol to talk to the device may not be standard, but the transport over the wire is. Bit-bus did not share the same popularity. I think the lesson is to choose instrumenation buses that are well supported.
