I even found the details of Marty's answer. But admittedly I didn't find
out more about the problem nor did it stay on my mind for much longer...

Since msi writes all output to stdout what can it do if it fails?
Note that when it detects errors it writes messages to stderr and calls
usageExit which returns a value of 1. This the script that calls it
could remove any redirected file is msi returns 1.
Have you found out any more about this problem?
