Experimental Physics and Industrial Control System

We are looking to upgrade one of our IOCs. We want to select something
"mainstream," that uses common hardware and proven/working drivers! [We
don't want to re-invent the wheel -- we want to roll!] For the record,
we're using EPICS 3.14.2 and currently have VXI chassis running Kinetics cards.
For this new unit, we are leaning toward a VME chassis with a Power PC
processor. [TJNAF's Matthew Bickley speaks highly of their Motorola
MVME2700s with VMIC I/O cards.]
So....the missing link is a way to speak to our A-B PLCs. We [believe we]
want to communicate over Ethernet between the IOC and A-B PLC.
1) Does anyone have similar systems running in this configuration? [I
was told SNS did this, but am not certain.]
--Could you recommend hardware?
--Would you share available drivers?
2) Any recommendations or comments regarding our tentative choice of VME
hardware?
--Power PCs in general and the MVME2700 in particular?
--other vendor recommendations for I/O cards?
Since this first unit is likely the first step toward a migration path for
our other IOCs, we'd like to start off on the right foot!
Thanks.
