Hi, Bob et al,
We've been using aliases in our client-side Simple Channel Access library
for years. It is quite useful. One useful capability that is harder to do
on the server side is context-sensitive aliases. For example, beamline
endstation software can access a PV like 'my-undulator-gap', and it still
works even when the endstation is moved to a different undulator beamline.

Hi Larry,
Well, it's something that we've discussed many times. It could be done
fairly straight forwardly on the server. One of the reasons people use
CDEV - is for the name aliasing. XAL also provides a name alias. Of
course, both of these are on the server side. We've discussed this as a
function of the name server as well. I am not sure if any of the name
server currently support the feature.
In short - I agree that it's a good idea. We need to get it into one of
the releases.
