In addition to alh we also have an alarm logger to log changes in alarm
status for PVs. The output file is in SDDS format and contains
information such as time of occurrence, alarm designation, severity of
the alarm, and row location of the previous alarm status change. We then
have a Tcl/Tk GUI to review the alarm logs at our leisure.

Efforts to implement the EPICS Alarm Handler from APS here at SNS have
not been as straightforward as initially anticipated. In the case for
some subsystems, the engineers are looking at alternative approaches
that they consider to be more intuitive and easier to use. Maybe one
solution should not be expected to fit all situations. Opinions about
how alarms should be displayed, announced (audible warning systems),
acknowledged, and logged cover a wide range of views. We are at a stage
of implementation where we could benefit from the experiences of others.

A particular area of interest is the use of audible alarms. What is
being used? How are they implemented?

Comments, suggestions, lessons learned, anecdotes, histories, conference
papers, etc., in this area would be greatly appreciated.
