macro name inside the $() or ${} which gets replaced in a substitution, not about the characters that make up the macro value itself. I only need to know if you use substitutions of the form P:Q=<something> or y#2=<something> i.e. the special characters are to the left of the equals sign rather than to the right. I suspect this is pretty rare, because most people won't have realized that they are currently allowed to use such characters in a macro name.
