http://www.aps.anl.gov/epics/modules/soft/asyn This release has three major new features 1) Synchronous support - Support is now provided for synchronous drivers, i.e. drivers that do not block. 2) Register based support - Interfaces for communicating with register based drivers is now available. 3) Generic register based device suport for standard EPICS records - This support will work for drivers that implement the register based interfaces. 3) Is not complete. Both 2) and 3) will likely evolve rapidly over the next couple of releases. With these additions asynDriver provides a framework for interfacing to a wide variety of I/O. Several asynDriver related projects are active. SYNAPPS - Mark River is making major contributions to asynDriver. In fact all three major new features were initiated by Mark. Mark, together with the BCDA group at APS have been converting SYNAPPS to use asynDriver instead of MPF. STREAMS - Dirk Zimoch is converting STREAMS so that it will use asynDriver. linux-gpib - This is open source gpib support, http://linux-gpib.sourceforge.net, COSYLAB (Gasper Jansa) is implementing asynDriver support that communicates with linux-gpib supported controllers. COSYLAB is doing this under order from Danfysik (control system for the booster for APS). It is likely that this support will be made available with asynDriver and thus be available under the asynDriver open source license. What remains? This can be summarized by saying "support more and more I/O". One VERY desirable addition would be asynDriver support for comedi, http://www.comedi.org/ COSYLAB is willing to implement asynDriver support for interfacing to comedi. They will, of course, only be able to do this if they are paid but, assuming the customer agrees, will make the support available under an open source license.
