Hi Martin,

If you can get an OPC server for your "sort of PLC" things you could run
the OPC Device Support (see EPICS Soft Support List for more info) and
connect to all such devices in one generic way.

Issues I can see:
+ All proprietary stuff is hidden in the commercially acquired OPC
server, no need to dig into proprietary protocols and write specific
   Device Support
+ Different "sort of PLC" things can be accessed in a generic fashion
+ EPICS databases are configured straightforward and easy

 - Needs at least one dedicated Windows machine for the IOC / OPC client
   to run on
 - More layers = more places where things can break - which might be
   hard to track down
 - The OPC servers have to be configured to connect to the devices, so
configuration effort is more or less shifted from EPICS to the OPC
   server layer

So you have to look at your existing hardware / software situation, OPC
server availability, and on who is going to implement and support this
stuff to decide if that's an interesting way for you to go.

Regards,
Ralph
