You can use compression record to take statistics. (some of option for N to
1 compression).

I remember there was a first attempt (about a year ago) to bundle a 
bunch of existing waveform signal processing records into a soft support 
module and make it available for download. (I remember some records 
doing statistics - similar to what you need - from APS and a digital FFT 
record from LANL.)

Does anyone know how far this attempt got? Does anyone feel responsible 
for it?
