I don't know about plans for base.  But there is a supported record called "sscan" in synApps.  It is similar to scan, but with some additional features.

Some time ago (December 2003), Marty announced that the scan record will
be back in the next 3.14 release.

Does anyone know what happened to that project?

Will there be a scan record for 3.14 again?
