If 40 characters is enough, use a stringin record (the device support
could fetch the latest message). If you need more than 40 characters,
use a waveform record with type = char.

There are items in the GE Multilin relays that are 'strings' that can be read by my driver. Is there any way to make the string available to a DB record, such that if I get an alarm condition (which is what the strings are), I can display the string in the display somehow?
