Hi Heinrich,
At SPEAR, we use ChannelWatcher (CW) to monitor our stringouts and then have ChannelWatcher log the changes to CMLOG. To add a stringout, I change the CW config file and restart CW. CW has some mechanism to meter messages (to stop floods) but we're not using that feature.
I know there are problems with CMLOG running at LCLS but I haven't seen the problems at SPEAR for whatever reason.
Also, at LCLS, iocLogServer was changed to forward iocLog messages to CMLOG. This change has some sort of message metering implemented.
