At the CLS we use Heidenhain Endat encoders on most of our insertion
devices. The difficulty is the last time we looked there was no vendors
with a VME endat card. We ended up having to use a carrier board that
allows you to install PC-104 cards in a VME crate. If interested, Tony
Wilson wrote the EPICS interface software. I can provide you with the
AutoCAD drawings for the front-panel and the wiring we use, all the
electronics is commercial off-the-shelf equipment.
Dynatem DPC104 - Is the PC104 carrier board for VME.
MAZeT MMI200 - Is the Endat encoder card.

At LCLS, we have a requirement for a Heidenhain model ROC-425 or ECN-425
absolute multi-turn rotary encoder. It comes with two types of 'serial'
interface: SSI, or EnDat22.
Are any EPICS users familiar with this model? I am just learning about
these interfaces. If either of them goes directly to a standard serial
port, then asyn support would seem to be ideal.
Thanks in advance for any advice or examples.
