You don't mention what version of Scientific Linux you're trying to use. I wonder if the root cause could be the removal of the X Font Server, like it is with edm and recent (> 7) versions of Fedora? http://www.aps.anl.gov/epics/tech-talk/2009/msg00393.php has more details with how to get around that problem.
Otherwise, try downloading xorg-x11-fonts-75dpi and xorg-x11-fonts-100dpi. You might also be able to get a better idea of what fonts you have available using xfontsel instead of xlsfonts.
