Hi John--

I was just playing with SDS the other day and saw the same thing. 
For the thermometer and presumably some other widgets, the value 
is not dynamic, but is set to the numeric value of 50 by default. 
(I don't know why). You need to right-click on the value on the 
properties tab and set dynamic aspect to the channel you are 
trying to monitor.
