My question is this: To what extent are the physics parameters part of the controls? . . . Ideally, I think it should be quite closely coupled. I have set up a storage ring and booster control system to present many of the parameters in terms of the physics of the accelerator rather then in terms of the engineering units of the hardware. It worked quite well in practice and was very well received. And it definitely simplified and improved operation of the machine. It also made possible some things which would have been quite difficult to do otherwise (e.g. compensating for nonlinearities in an undulator in real-time while ramping beam energy). But it was not a simple job, and I expect would be more difficult to do on a larger project with more individuals involved. -- Steven Hartman [email protected] || 865-466-6473
