Title: RE: SNMP & Electrical power grid or generation plant
Hi Gorka,
EPICS has a commercial version, TIS4000, that was used in power distribution. EPICS/TIS4000 are DCS systems that include tools for SCADA and DCS. Batch control is possible with a state notation language, but the concept of recipes is not well defined in EPICS.
SNMP is a protocol to talk to intelligent hardware. Most network hardware provides an SNMP interface. EPICS has an SNMP driver. It is used to integrate such equipment into the larger system.
EPICS runs on a wide variety of hardware under vxWorks, RTEMS, most unix variants, and windows. Recently work has been done to support 64 bit machines. I am not clear on the state of this work.
I hope this helps.
Bob

Subject: SNMP & Electrical power grid or generation plant
Hi all,
Two questions:
1- What are the advantages of EPICS, compared to other options such as using SNMP?
2- Somebody using EPICS in an electrical power grid or electrical generation plant? What about the HW, SW used?
Thanks in advance,
Gorka Ronda
