Hello Pavel:

As you already noted, you can run CSS without installing EPICS base.
The only quirk is the caRepeater. 99% of users won't notice any difference.
Only those who keep CSS running for a long time, experiencing IOC reboots
or network outages, will find that Channel Access doesn't dependably re-connect
because of the missing CA repeater.

caRepeater is not running only if I use pure Java.
If on the contrary I set org.csstudio.platform.libs.epics/use_pure_java=false, then caRepeater launches right after I connect to a PV.

Guys, is it OK to use the pure_java Channel Access??

Hello to all CSS users!

I am wondering can CSS work without EPICS base?
I reckon the only trouble could be is the carepeater program that searches for the remote IOC's beacons.
Does this mean I should install EPICS base on each computer client in order to use CSS on these clients? If so, can I just copy the EPICS base (for a specific platform) directory and assign the environmental variables (easy solution)? Or I must compile base using make (which is tedious)?

Another thing I've noticed - I have got base installed, but I can't see carepeater.exe in the task manager. Even when I'm running an IOC. I've read somewhere that one should either manually start it or automatically on boot. How would you recommend me to do it (both on linux and windows)?

Thank you very much.
