When I was looking at this a couple of years ago, we found that there were no cross platform freely available SDKs that would work with all manufacturers' cameras. There are paid-for options, I have used stemmer imaging's common vision blox for test purposes, but we went for Aravis because it is open source.

I believe this is tied to AVT/Prosilica cameras only. On the plus side, Mark Rivers areaDetector driver worked well on RHEL5 Linux for us, but we found it restricting to be tied to one vendor

This is what we are currently using, but be aware that the developer of Aravis has reverse engineered it, as the GigE Vision protocol is not freely available. This means that you may have issues using cameras that the developer has not tested it with (we had some unresolved connection issues using a Sony CVC EH6300 camera). We are using it on RHEL5 Linux and it works reliably on the AVT Manta, Prosilica GC, Baumer TXG and JAI Pulnix 6740 series we have tested it with.
Thanks,
Tom
