Emmanuel:
We've used a few different Tektronix general purpose scopes with EPICS
interfaces using streamDevice now, all with Linux-GPIB asyn port drivers
(network interfaces are now common, and the EPICS interface should only
involve a change in the asyn port driver). In general, these work quite
well, although in most cases, there are aspects of the interface which
are messy/tricky to implement due to limitations of EPICS. One
consistent stumbling block is the horizontal sweep speed settings which
have too many discrete values to fit in a multi-bit binary record. There
have been issues with performance reading waveforms using streamDevice +
Linux-GPIB, which are presently fixed locally with an asyn-only approach
until the root cause can be repaired.
I far under-estimated the effort it requires to build a general purpose
interface to an oscilloscope, and also far under-estimated how much
difference there is between various models of scopes from even a single
reputable manufacturer. If your application can be assembled using a
well-defined and small-ish subset of the overall capability of a
general-purpose scope, then the effort should be far less.
I would be very curious to know what motivates you to move away from the
Ztec product, as we are considering their products as an alternative for
upcoming projects.
