Regarding the environment variable assignment, a cautious approach is to 
choose whether to define or extend the previous definition.  Here is one 
way in /bin/bash:

   if [ "" = "${LD_LIBRARY_PATH}" ]; then
       export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=${EPICS_BASE_LIB}
   else
       export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=${EPICS_BASE_LIB}:${LD_LIBRARY_PATH}
   fi
