Hi:
You can look at paper/talk from the Kobe 2009 meeting, copies are also on http://ics-web.sns.ornl.gov/kasemir/CSS/
For setup info, see http://ics-web.sns.ornl.gov/kasemir/CSS/
To get a useful setup, see B. Hollifield, E. Habibi, "Alarm Management: Seven Effective Methods for Optimum Performance", ISA, 2007
At the SNS, this is at least the 3rd attempt on an alarm system.
Compared to ALH, BEAST makes it even easier to add PVs.
The functionality is pretty simple: PV goes into alarm -> Notify operators of alarm, operators acknowlege, handle it, done.
The really hard part: Don't add 5000 PVs, about half of them happen to be in alarm, none have any guidance, links to related displays, many are redundant -> Totally useless.
Instead, you need to think quite hard about every single alarm:
What should operators _do_ ASAP when this alarm happens?
Is this the best PV for that situation, or would other PVs also catch the same scenario and make for an overall better alarm trigger? Maybe create a new PV for this type of alarm, with options to (automatically) disable based on machine state.
THEN add that PV to the alarm system, with guidance, links to related display, maybe web links to procedures.
Thanks,
Kay

Subject: BEAST screencast?
Kay,
I hope you are doing well.
I am interested in having a closer look at the BEAST alarm handler.
I am particularly interested in the operator perspective.
Is there any public screencast on how BEAST is used at ORNL?
I am also interested in understanding the feature set of the alarm server.
is there any documentation about it?
Regards,
