Hi Kay
I took your advice and the 'disconnected' $(mdev)
reported its value as null,
therefore not connecting.
Although I do change my passed macro to a
valid PV, somehow the initial $(mdev) shows null.
In my 'linking' OPI, I added a local
pv value of 0 to my macro
$mdev = $loc://mdev(0)
and now it works fine.
Thanks for all your valuable help.

No idea.
Right-click on the running
wheel widget, open "Show Macros" to see if the macro indeed
receives the text "Disconnected", or if the macro has an
erroneous PV name, so then the widget cannot connect to that bad
PV and thus shows Disconnected.
