It may be worth saying that this sort of verification is usually the
responsibility of an IOC. A well designed EPICS driver will indicate
communications faults, or other read errors, with an INVALID alarm.
CA or PVA clients can (and should) look at the alarm severity
as well as the value of each monitor update.
There are of course specific cases where this really isn't enough.
eg. to drive a soft PID loop at a fixed update rate.
