Hi Vincent,
Diamond is a Redhat shop and that works fine. But for epics-containers I have chosen Ubuntu to run inside the containers, I'm able to build everything I have needed in Ubuntu containers including cross compiling IOCs to RTEMS.
I chose Ubuntu because:
- they ship Long Term Support versions and are still doing so post announcements that kernel is lowering support length
- it is the OS of choice for GitHub Actions, therefore a majority of the world's open-source code is built inside Ubuntu VMs
- It is one of the most widely used Linux desktops so there is a great deal of help on Stack Overflow for issues with Ubuntu
- It's not Redhat.
- Redhat has very obsucure licensing for containers
- I personally can't get through the paywall for RedHat support even though my org pays for hundreds of licenses
- Their approach to open source has recently become controversial

Hi Vincent
We are in the process of migrating to Debian for IOC hosts.
I'd not use anything RedHat based, mostly due to the drama caused by said company in the last few months.

Hey Vincent,
for the PANDA detector control we are using Debian and AlmaLinux.
I never had any issues running EPICS IOCs on either OS.
Best regards,
Florian

Hi,
We’re in the process of starting a new green field setup for EPICS. The system will host one or more IOCs and possibly some archiver. Since we get to decide everything, the first decision I need to make is what a good choice of OS/Linux
distribution would be for this new EPICS configuration. I would think either AlmaLinux or Rocky Linux would be good candidates, but I may be missing something. Also important is which OS/distribution would you not use, and why?
Any ideas would be appreciated!
Thank you,
