It does appear that new C-663 controllers are no longer compatible with the old motorPI module, which uses the VE command to query controller ID strings, and should instead use the motorPIGCS2 module, which uses the *IDN? command to query controller ID strings.

The motorPIGCS2 has an example IOC configuration that can be copied and modified:
