+1 for nice idea!
Rather than mess with iocShell, it might be easier to hack procServ itself. Or maybe not even necessary to change any code - for example one could nail up an Asyn Stream Device connection to the procServ log socket, then simply count every line with a regex. Taking care that the new link doesn't itself add to the chatter to avoid a positive message feedback.
Nice idea!
If the iocShell or the libcom log context stepped up an (atomic) line counter, a simplistic longin support would show it, and database plumbing (calc record) could create the flickering "activity" bit.
