AFAIK setting environment variables is supported by most OSes. E.g. on 
Windows you can adjust them under Control Panel -> System and Security 
-> System -> Advanced system settings -> Environment Variables. You can 
set them on a per-user basis or globally.

In general I would prefer to keep caget/caput/camonitor as simple as 
possible. In many cases the intention behind using these simple tools is 
getting rid of all the complexity of a high-level client. What's not in 
there cannot break...
