Indeed, I tried with OS X El Capitan. The same story; both Archive Utility
and command line  tar tell me that they have no permissions but I have for
sure permissions to write in that directory.

Trying to trace what happens:

Everything seems to be going fine until trying to create the
.gitattributes file. After that, no files could be created.
However, even those files that tar claimed to be able to create were not
there. Directories are but they are empty.
This is where my Mac expertise ends....
