A printf-like string is obviously insufficient. As noted later in this
thread, it does not support selective use of such meta data. Thus an
effort should be made to define the minimum set of formatting meta data
for each pvData scalar type. Generic Normative Types such as NTScalar
can then use a (tagged) union of structures with one case for each
primitive scalar type. Other Normative Types where the underlying scalar
data type is fixed can use the structure associated with this type directly.
