Hi,

I'm planning to attend. Planned FRIB contributions include:
- RecSyncETCD: A Fault-tolerant Service for EPICS PV Configuration Data
- Continuous Integration and Automatic Deployment of EPICS IOCs
- Support Module for efficient UDP communication with FPGAs

This needs to be celebrated :-) At the same time this is also an
opportunity to look into the future. More and more facilities are
leveraging the features of v7 and with modern compilers and standard
libraries (C11/C++11 and beyond) trickling into the embedded world,
writing efficient, maintainable and correct EPICS applications is
becoming easier. At the same time increasing numbers of cores and
devices as well as growing data rates are resulting in new challenges.

For us as library developers I think it is essential to have a clear
picture of how users are using our code. I would like to suggest to

* collect some usage data: which labs are using EPICS? how many IOC
instances do they run? which EPICS versions are being used on which
platforms? which modules are they using? - We might want to conduct a
little survey.
* present this data prominently along with a road map and reasons to
upgrade
* encourage developers to contribute
* give concrete guidance to developers in terms of which new features/
APIs they might want to leverage and which old ones might be phased out soon

If someone want's to include the results in their talk I would be happy
to help collecting the data.

-Martin
