@Keenan: It isn't the "on" command itself I was thinking about so much as the effect that it has, which is to save the "what to do if there's an error" instruction from it and then later do that thing if a command returns an error status. Since a lua "iocsh.cmd(args)" statement ends up calling the same cmd_callFunc() that iocsh does (which returns void), lua doesn't see any error status either, so the only way to know whether the command flagged an error or not would be to ask iocsh if iocshSetError() was called, hence your need for an iocshGetError() routine.
