I disagree, initially at least - why shouldn't we use this code, it's there to
allow existing programs to be compiled with only minimal changes. While it may
be desirable eventually to get away from using the ucb compatibility libraries,
I felt it was more important to produce something which would build and run on
the Solaris systems we have today, without taking up too much effort. By keeping
the number of changes in the sources to a minimum I could be more confident of
not introducing additional bugs myself. Reliability should be more important
than "religion" where software is concerned.
In fact I started out by doing the full SVR4 conversion, but I felt that
initially we should release something which works with as few changes as
possible, so I removed the unnecessary mod's when generating the patch file I
sent to Janet (having checked the "un-changes" didn't break anything).

This is not true - I received Kim's list of changes after I had already
converted base and some of the extensions to use the SVR4 libraries. Some of his
changes (eg to the RULES files) are not portable and would break compilation
under SunOS, and maybe under the other architectures as well. This would
obviously not be acceptable in anything which is to be released to the whole
consortium, thus he has a fair amount of work to do before he could incorporate
his version into the release.
